Description | Contents | Los García

In 1903 the ardent promoter of the cultures of the Southwest, Charles Fletcher Lummis, took on an immense project. With his charter in hand for the Southwest Society, a chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America, he purchased an Edison wax cylinder recording machine and proceeded to “catch our archaeology alive” by recording hundreds of the disappearing songs of the californios and Native Americans of the region.

Those of the Edison wax cylinders that are still extant reside at the Southwest Museum’s Braun Research Library in Highland Park, now part of The Autry Center.

This music book reflects a small part of that collection — specifically the songs that Lummis collected from members of the García family.

All of these pieces are included in the ten-volume Music of Early California collection, although they are scattered among the various years. If you already have that work, you may not want this one.

The García Family

Manuela Garcia

Manuela García

Born in Los Angeles in 1869, Manuela García recorded 107 pieces — the largest number from any of Lummis’ informants. An accomplished singer with a tremendous repertoire, she grew up in a household that sometimes included the influential Mexican guitarist Miguel Arévalo. Most of the songs featured in Lummis’ folio, Spanish Songs of Old California, were included in Manuela’s repertoire. Many of these pieces are probably more recent in California, coming with the Mexican immigration of the second half of the nineteenth century, but they have become so associated with californio heritage in the traditions of californio descendants that they have effectively merged into that heritage.

Manuela was herself a guitarist, but on many pieces she elected to be accompanied by another Lummis informant, Rosendo Uruchurtu. He also occasionally sings along on the pieces.

In addition to her recordings, Manuela was a popular presenter at Lummis’ events.
