1 Mantón de Manila comes from a popular Spanish zarzuela: La verbena de la Paloma (1894) by Tomás Bretón with libretto by Ricardo de la Vega. Charles Lummis recorded Enferina Soleta singing a version of this piece in 1904.

2 Eleanor Hague also wrote several music books about californio and Spanish-language music in the Americas. She worked with Lummis’ cylinder recordings, and published some of her transcriptions of those recordings. Since she was here participating in this event that included some of the Lummis informants, she would have had the opportunity to work directly with those informants in deciphering the recordings. Find further information about Ms. Hague’s work at loscalifornios.info/#Hague.

3 Rosa and Luisa Villa recorded a number of songs for Charles Lummis in 1904. Find pictures of them and their family (including their brother, Hernando) at loscalifornios.info/#villa.

4 Rosendo Uruchurtu recorded songs for Charles Lummis in 1904. Find a picture of him at loscalifornios.info/#uruchurtu.
